Eco-ex is a social enterprise established by a group of Exeter University students. We seek to provide a solution to the climate emergency challenge set up by the university during Grand challenges week. 

 Eco-ex is a browser extension that provides a solution to the environmental impacts of the food industry. At eco-ex we intend to change customers' behaviour and practices in the food industry, to make more sustainable choices.

Aims:

1- to provide customers transparency on the environmental impact of the food products they buy online.

2- Provides customers with substitutes for food products that have a high environmental impact. Finding customers more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives through our browser extension

Today 29% of food shopping is done online, eco-ex is utilising this demand to create a positive behaviour change and shift buying habits to more environmentally friendly products.  Eco-ex provides a digital and innovative platform that solves the environmental issues of the food industry's practices, giving transparency to complex global food supply chains and their environmental impact on items in your shopping basket. 

Platform extension: 

Once downloaded onto your chrome, eco-ex operates in the background while you online food shop. The browser extension rates the environmental impact of the food products in your basket using Foundations Earths’ eco-labeling scheme. This labeling scheme creates a traffic light score based on the environmental impact of the individual items of food in your basket. The rating system includes carbon emissions, water usage, water pollution, and biodiversity of your food. Exo-ex will suggest sustainable alternatives to products that produce a high environmental impact score.  At the end of each online food shop, an overall environmental impact score and traffic light score will be assigned to your online food shop. Your shop will be placed on a leaderboard with other eco-ex customers and connected friends. Eco points and rewards will be assigned to those who are high up the leaderboard!
